When you’re all that’s left, who can you count on?

When aliens invade Earth with just one deadly agenda, humans are forced into the rainforest to avoid fatal bombs and merciless ground troops. A group of unlikely strangers comes together under the command of ex-army reservist, Jared, to start the dangerous trek through an unforgiving landscape of bugs, snakes and enemies, to find a safe place to bunker down.

The dwindling group faces a failed coup, disease, hunger, pestilence and wild dogs, but third-year pharmacy student, Jess, steps up to become doctor not only to her new friends, but also to strangers along the way, in a bid to keep everyone alive.

Together, Jared and Jess lead the team with one mission. To stay alive and one step ahead of a fate worse than death…

This is the debut novel and first in series of Australian author K A Allen. A unique story of survival and friendship in the face of an alien invasion. It is told in first-person at a YA level but suits all audiences who appreciate a fast-paced read with a plot that doesn’t give up.

Group member Brenda May

Keeps your eyes and ears open for the launch of each of Brenda's books in this series.

Activities

Cassowary Coast Writers Group, hopes to achieve more with our initiatives than ever before. We are working on a number of exciting projects to assist writers of all ages to improve their skills and learn from experienced authors from throughout the writing community, we are very proud of the progress we continue to make.

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
― Neil Gaiman

About our Group.

The group recently underwent a name change, we were formerly known as Licualawinq Writers and now Cassowary Coast Writers, don't be confused if you find something with our old moniker. The group meets on the last Sunday of each month 10am until noon. Due to the Cassowary Coast being such a spread out community, the meetings have always taken place in cafés, one in the north of the region [Innisfail] and on alternate months, a café in the south of the region [Mission Beach] so all members share travel distance. However, we are trialing a venue in the middle. The El Arish Tavern's dining room will be our home for the time being. Meetings are easy going and not regimented, food is available (at your cost).

New projects, ideas, workshops and conferences are discussed, and members read out their homework stories, writing homework is set for the following meeting each month, in the form of a short story or poem, 300 words, on a chosen subject, homework is not compulsory, but it is a lot of fun to see what different people do with the same subject matter.

Being part of a group makes the writing process more enjoyable. We get a truer sense of where we are in our writing journey by associating with likeminded people who understand what our journey actually is.

Being part of a writers group creates accountability, we stay engaged, sharing work regularly helps keep you focused. It also improves our writing by adding outside perspectives and help with feedback.

New members are always welcome, and the group is very diverse in age and genre.

Membership is $20 yr and meetings are free. Please contact us to see where the next meeting will be.

Some of the projects previously undertaken by the group are highlighted in the photo's below, the publication of two books by the group, " Under one Sky" and " A Tapestry of War" along with works in conjunction with Mission Arts at Mission Beach.

“Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.”

It is the writer who might catch the imagination of young people, and plant a seed that will flower and come to fruition.
